18th C French Square Hand-Carved Limestone Trough (#3 of Four)

It is exceedingly rare to see any trough carved with a “circle in a square”, and we are thrilled to have sourced a matched set of four 18th Century ones. We think they would make magnificent fountains, one in each quadrant of a parterre, either raised up on pedestals and surrounded by boxwoods, or installed at grade with no abutting plantings. Trough #3, seen here, has three relatively equal and level sides, but requires shimming on the fourth (shown in photos). There is not yet a drain hole in the trough, but it is quite easy to drill through the limestone to suit your preferred plumbing method. This trough will need to be installed on compacted gravel, concrete footings or a concrete slab to prevent sinkage over time. In harsh winter climates, limestone troughs need to be emptied of water in the late fall and the opening covered with a piece of plywood weighted with stones on top. Weight is approximately 1200 lbs. Please note that although we have listed the four troughs separately, we offer a special price for all four purchased together.
