Pair of French Mid-Century Cast Stone Bowl Planters on Pedestals

These mid-century modern planters offer commodious planting wells and a striking form that will lend a statuesque presence anywhere in your garden. In wonderful vintage condition with a few very minor chips but no cracks or repairs, they are large enough to support a profuse display of blooms and waving grasses. Original center drain holes are present and the tops lift off for easy transport. They can remain outside year-round in all climates, provided they are installed on gravel or stone to prevent wicking and should be emptied of plant material and dirt and the openings covered in harsh winter climates. They can also be used as birdbaths if you seal the drain holes. Approximate weight is 100 lbs. per planter.

18th C French Square Hand-Carved Limestone Trough (#4 of Four)

It is exceedingly rare to see any trough carved with a “circle in a square”, and we are thrilled to have sourced a matched set of four 18th Century ones. We think they would make magnificent fountains, one in each quadrant of a parterre, either raised up on pedestals and surrounded by boxwoods, or installed at grade with no abutting plantings. Trough #4, seen here, is the most even-shaped of all four, but will require a bit of shimming at installation. There is not yet a drain hole in the trough, but it is quite easy to drill through the limestone to suit your preferred plumbing method. The lighter color on the top right-hand corner is because something previously rested there for a very long time, but this will weather over in a few years with continued exposure to the elements. This trough will need to be installed on compacted gravel, concrete footings or a concrete slab to prevent sinkage over time. In harsh winter climates, limestone troughs need to be emptied of water in the late fall and the opening covered with a piece of plywood weighted with stones on top. Weight is approximately 1200 lbs. Please note that although we have listed the four troughs separately, we offer a special price for all four purchased together.

18th C French Square Hand-Carved Limestone Trough (#3 of Four)

It is exceedingly rare to see any trough carved with a “circle in a square”, and we are thrilled to have sourced a matched set of four 18th Century ones. We think they would make magnificent fountains, one in each quadrant of a parterre, either raised up on pedestals and surrounded by boxwoods, or installed at grade with no abutting plantings. Trough #3, seen here, has three relatively equal and level sides, but requires shimming on the fourth (shown in photos). There is not yet a drain hole in the trough, but it is quite easy to drill through the limestone to suit your preferred plumbing method. 18th C French Square Hand-Carved Limestone Trough (#2 of Four)

Trough #2, seen here, has pretty regular sides but will require a bit of shimming upon installation (shown in photos). There is a single drain hole in the trough (see photos), but it is quite easy to drill through the limestone if you require another one in a different location. Three Large French Deco Style Trumpet-Shaped Cast Stone Planters

The form of these heavy cast stone planters is so elegant and the planting wells so capacious that you will find so many places to use these in your garden. Art Deco in style, they go with everything and will give you decades of pleasure. We originally had 4, but broke one during transport, so there are three remaining and we have priced them individually so you can buy 1, 2 or 3. All are in excellent condition with no cracks, repairs or missing bits. The white paint is no more than 10 years old and looks great on this form, but of course, you can repaint them to any color of your choosing. The paint on the rims has weathered to a lovely pale gray color. Each planter has a drain hole drilled in the side near the bottom of the planting well to keep your plants well-drained. Two have rust stains to the paint from water with a high iron content and we will try and scrub them clean, but they may need a new coat of paint. Fabulous flanking your front door or entrance to your garden, potted up with agapanthus, vinca and moss or as table bases for a huge marble top to seat 12+ in the garden or inside. Sensational!

Three Large Curved Segments from an 18th C French Granite Cider Mill

We found these three segments of an 18thC Cider Mill in Brittany and they are superb! Originally, there would have been 5 segments to form a continuous ring, but these three have had cast stone ends added to each segment to form large, enclosed planters. We think they would be amazing all together, potted up with a variety of tall annuals and trailing vines (to obscure the ends), and placed behind a curved bench. What a focal point in your garden! Alternatively, the segments could be flipped upside-down to form one or more curved benches, but please be aware that the bottoms are not smooth and are a bit bumpy. Lastly, what an above-ground rill these would make! Drain holes are not present, but should be drilled if you will use them as planters. We recommend installing them on concrete footings or compacted gravel to prevent sinkage over time, but no other care is needed. Granite is the hardest stone and can be left outside uncovered year-round in all climates. Although we would prefer to sell these as a group, we will consider splitting the set so just give us a call.

Stunning 19th C French Cast Iron Jardinière

This is a fabulous 19th Century jardinière in its original silver paint, but sadly, is lacking part of one foot (an inelegant solution is a piece of cork, but we think a new foot could be fashioned from Bondo). It perfectly embodies the illustrious Beaux Arts period with its rococo panels, corners, feet, and finials and it is the perfect size for a tabletop arrangement. If you look closely you can see that the jardinière was assembled with screws, so we guarantee its authenticity. Fill it with white orchids and moss or, for a colorful Spring display, try daffodils, narcissus, grape hyacinths, and tulips. Magnifique!

Near-Pair of Very Large German Oval Galvanized Planters #3 with Custom Surface

We were fortunate to source several near-pairs of these marvelous galvanized tub planters that date to the 1930s and had them custom-finished by a very talented artisan in Spain. This is one of three near-pairs that we have (the fourth near-pair is smaller). The color of the paint is a bit more vibrant than the photos show and the one that reads pink is, in fact, not. You will LOVE these potted up with tulips, daffodils and grape hyacinths for the spring, colorful annuals for the summer and wavy grasses for the fall. They are virtually indestructible, have their original drain holes, and can work in a cottage garden setting as well as a contemporary one. And the painted surface is in acrylic and will last a lifetime. Approximate weight is 45 lbs each.

Pair of Enormous Saucer Planters by Willy Guhl

Designed by the iconic Willy Guhl in the 1960s and made of strong and lightweight fiber cement by Eternit, SA of Switzerland, these numbered saucer planters are impressive for their size and patina. One is in excellent condition with only a very small, well-weathered rim chip, while the other has been repaired with staples and mortar on the bottom side but is very solid. Please note you will not be able to see the repair when planted. Pot them up with low mounded moss or sedum and waving grasses for an exceptional contemporary display in your garden or on your terrace or beach house deck. Please note that each planter weighs about 50 lbs. and they should be emptied of plant material and turned upside-down for over-wintering in northern climates.

Enormous Pair of German Ceramic Crucible Planters

Crucibles have been used throughout history to smelt metal and other substances, but the ceramic ones make outstanding planters. These grabbed us right away because of their enormous size and stunning sea-green color. Their very large planting wells will accommodate topiary and small trees and they have barely been used so the usual rim chips are pretty much absent. Wonderful potted up with moss for a Zen look or with Millet grass and trailing vines, they would be fabulous flanking the door of a contemporary or Arts and Crafts home. Stamped “Made in Germany”.
