Tall French Fleur-de-Lys Terracotta Finial on English Terracotta Plinth

We’ve never seen any finial this tall, let alone such a stunning French one with 2 fleurs-de-lys and a detailed pineapple-form top. The beaded decoration near the bottom, combined with the fluted upright sections and barley-twist motif (near the base) are truly stunning, as is the condition. The color is a lovely pale salmon pink with a faded pale gray patina that works with everything in your garden. We have married it to a low English Victorian reeded plinth/pedestal to ground it and add even more presence. The plinth is in very good overall condition with a few nicks and chips and features a chippy and old white painted surface that is perfect to reveal the color underneath. Place this as the center focal point in an herb or rose garden and enjoy a truly unique piece of antique garden art. We strongly recommend installing the terracotta plinth on a piece of stone so that it does not wick moisture from the ground in climates that experience freeze-thaw cycles. BTW, the finial and base come apart for easy shipping and installation.

French Cast Stone and Iron White Flamingo

We jumped at the chance to buy this grouping of four French flamingos and a heron (shown in the last two photos), and this is the white flamingo. Made of cast stone with iron legs, and very solid, he cuts a dashing figure, in spite of the recent, but attractively-done, painted surface. Note the iron legs that cleverly meld into the hand-painted splayed feet on the base. In excellent condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs, he would lend a whimsical note to your garden, alone or grouped with the other flamingos.

'Still Life with Quinces' by Stefaan Eyckmans

Quinces are a symbol of fertility, and for the artist, they’re adored for their voluptuous, irregular shape. To him, imperfect fruits are more realistic, more truthful, and most beautiful. In this large composition, the bright, primary coloring of the quinces is heightened by their placement in front of the vintage oil can and wine bottle; all rendered in intricate detail via skillful shadowing. Note the contrasts of light that achieve a sense of volume in the objects, particularly in the folds of the linen and in the 16th century earthenware colander holding the quinces. The starkness of the few objects within a considerable negative space is Contemporary Realism at its purest, where traditional aspects of the painting express current-day characteristics.

This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden, the artist’s exclusive representative and gallery in the U.S.

Stefaan Eyckmans was born in Niel, Belgium, a brickyard village in the shadow of Antwerp. The son of Louis Eyckmans, a painter and commercial artist, Stefaan was introduced to the tools of drawing and painting at an early age.

During his student days, Stefaan was strongly influenced by the Flemish Primitives, the great 17th century still life painters, and the Antwerp hyperrealist movement, led by Willem Dolphyn. Later, Stefaan's work shows the impact of Henk Helmantel's impasto technique and the austere compositions of Giorgio Morandi.

After completing his education as a graphic designer and illustrator, Stefaan worked for a time in advertising, simultaneously concentrating more and more on his painting. He soon discovered that he was forever drawn to the silent world of the studio where patient observation and exacting style allowed him to slowly build his timeless compositions...paintings that serve as an antidote to our stressful computer-dominated lifestyles.

After years of experimenting with numerous media and materials, Stefaan developed a tonal technique employed by the Old Masters that incorporates common everyday objects with modern materials and colors, resulting in Contemporary Realism with its roots in 17th and 18th century traditional painting.

The simple objects in Stefaan's paintings are transformed by his masterful technique to show us their unexpected beauty. Essential to this effect is the interaction of light and dark, multi-layering, and glazing. The result is a powerful and beautiful whole, strong and alive, that initially attracts the viewer from a distance through color, composition, and lighting, but which is fully revealed only upon examination of each painting's intimate details.

Stefaan has exhibited at numerous prestigious international venues and his paintings are on permanent display at galleries in the US, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Stefaan's patrons include collectors around the world, from museum CEOs to captains of industry to designers to art-lovers everywhere, each of whom finds unrivaled beauty and peace in his paintings.

Stefaan was gifted this skull by a friend, whose carpenter father found many years ago in a false ceiling. The skull sat in his workshop and was eventually named “Gilda”. The composition is unusual in its stark simplicity that speaks to the inevitable death we all face. Fascinating without being morbid, the arrangement is simple yet bold. Note the extraordinary brushwork detailed in the shroud, as well as the intricacies of the skull. The slash of phthalo blue in the background provides an ethereal quality. The title is adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is the artist’s inside joke on the character “Guildenstern” vs “Gilda”. Part of the title can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the painting. Compared to “Vanitas”, painted in 2000, the artist’s evolution in form and execution is most evident in this 2018 work.

The “Shell” brand oil tin, nautilus, and little cowrie are Stefaan’s inside jokes in this surprising composition that marries disparate subjects. The nautilus is a symbol of the Golden Ratio, first used in ancient times by the Greek mathematician Euclides, and now paramount to modern discussions of aesthetics and art. The artist never uses the Golden Ratio parameters consciously, but looking back at his finished works, one can see those dimensions quite clearly, as if he had mapped them mathematically from the start. Perhaps this is an extension of the artist’s notion of beauty as objective, rather than subjective, and his intuitive sense of composition. Note the deep contrasts in color and light, even though the overall palette is pale.

With its mostly white tones and intricate, textured background, this work is nearly a complete departure from the artist’s other paintings. Although it is executed in a powerful chiaroscuro from a classical point of view, the counterpoint of contemporary objects with the vibrant colors make this painting distinctly modern. Green cabbage and spring onions “pop” against the simple white enameled jug and plate. Note the sophisticated strokes of the onion roots, the cabbage leaves, and the tablecloth. The unexpected Chinese characters in the upper right corner translate to “pure white.”

The first Eyckmans’ painting to employ a brighter, golden palette, this everyday kitchen scene explores the differing textures of the objects within. The artist’s love of all things French is exemplified here with antique pottery, a starched linen tablecloth, breadboard and, of course, fruit and favorite cheeses. Note the superb shadowing of the board extending over the table, the detailing in the chèvre and paper wrapping to the left, and the asymmetrical cluster of stemmed Muscat grapes, all illuminated by easterly light. Classical in perspective and execution, but with a more contemporary feel that derives from the use of color and light, this painting marks a transformational point in the artist’s work.

Inspired by 17th century Masters, Davidz De Heem and Willem Heda, this Eckymans’ painting is a classical still life celebrating his predecessors’ great realism and craftsmanship. The exceptional pewter pitcher is an 18th century “Schnabelstitze” (beak jug) and is complemented by other antique pewter vessels, one with a ceramic body for textural interest. Pewter is favored by the artist because of its faded patina and subtle shine. The muted color scheme of grey and blue is offset by the addition of vibrant lemons. Note the fine shadowing in the folds of the tablecloth and the imperfections in the vessels and tabletop. The graphic feel, sharpened by the artists’ previous life in advertising, lends a contemporary atmosphere to Stefaan’s work, even in a more traditional still life.

One of the artist’s earlier works, this compelling still life features conventional objects: antique pewter, a coffee mill, and a Westerwald jug, painted in traditional perspective from above. The arresting interplay of the persimmons against the silver and brown tones is contemporary in feel, though it remains classical in execution. The pieces are from the collection of a Belgian antiquarian who kept special, slightly damaged objects for the artist, as Stefaan couldn’t afford the pristine pieces himself. This painting took an inordinately long time to complete, as the artist worked on it again and again until the structure and colors finally came together for him.

Created in 2000, and much inspired by the Old Masters, this painting combines many “vanitas” symbols—reminders that change and death are inevitable. The skull, aging books, extinguished candle, fallen cup, and stopped watch are beautifully composed in close-up, utilizing a minimum of negative space. One can see the fuzzy and unrecognizable reflection of the painter, quite rare for him, in the silver incense holder. Note the complex composition, the strong use of chiaroscuro, and the masterful depiction of the human skull, the threads of the unravelling books, and the smoke of the candle. Please note that the last photo is of the reverse side of the painting, indicating the that panel was reused. Unlike Stefaan’s other works, this painting is sold unframed.

This whimsical example of “vanitas” plays with the unexpected elements that represent the life cycle. The cat skull was found by Stefaan’s dog, who loves to retrieve animal bones from the corners of their French property and present them to the artist for consideration. Fond of natural materials, particularly skulls, the artist sees striking, sculptural, and even mathematical characteristics in such subjects. The kitten postcard depicts a painting by Henriette Ronner-Knip, a famous cat painter. Mickey Mouse is there as an antagonist to the cat, although the amber bottle is tagged “mouse poison” in Latin, for a bit of playful schadenfreude.

Stefaan’s tribute to the great French neoclassical painter stems from first seeing Gericault’s horses in Ghent as a child. Growing up, the artist was a keen horseman and often rode with his father, until back surgery at the age of 25 ended his riding days. The portrait of the white horse on the postcard is a Gericault painting. Among the personal toys on the shelf is a treasured wooden horse bought in Brussels more than 30 years ago. It appears frequently in the artist’s work as it reminds him of his childhood and late father. The superb placement of objects with different vanishing points deftly leads the viewer through complex geometric patterns and textural shadows.

Stefaan has exhibited at numerous prestigious international venues and his paintings are on permanent display at galleries in the US, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Stefaan's patrons include collectors around the world, from museum CEOs to captains of industry to designers to art-lovers everywhere, each of whom finds unrivaled beauty and peace in his paintings.

Here, Stefaan creates an allegory of aging France by choosing objects that evoke a strong sentiment of the country’s evolution and placing them chronologically from background to foreground. In spite of the controversial image on the 1930s Banania cocoa tin, the saturated colors and powerful logo make this rare object one of particular interest. The tin partially eclipses a dusty antique wine bottle, while the vintage 1940s Citroen panel car and cat’s eye marble are playful elements representing the constancy of childhood games, and hope for the future. The piece of postcard taped to the bottom reads “Chemin de Fer Paris-Orleans,” an early 20th century advertising piece. A quintessential example of Contemporary Realism, this work is bold in content and context.

He soon discovered that he was forever drawn to the silent world of the studio where patient observation and exacting style allowed him to slowly build his timeless compositions paintings that serve as an antidote to our stressful computer-dominated lifestyles.

'Still Life with Plums' by Stefaan Eyckmans

Oil on panel, signed and dated 2009. French handmade wooden Delf frame, red bolus ground with gold leaf.

This striking and animated combination of plums with a 15th century earthenware bowl placed atop a worn plank table hearkens back to the Old Masters while remaining present-day through its geometric composition and use of negative space. Chosen for their pictorial qualities—shape, color, scale, and satiny skin, a true representation of plums is difficult to capture, as their essence changes and degrades in a matter of hours. As such, the artist focused on including their essential details in the first layer, a practice that is unusual for him. Note the exceptional detailing in the fine variations of the fruit, particularly the stems, and the progressive feel attained through the balance of light and color.

This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden, the artist’s exclusive representative and gallery in the U.S.

Pair of French Art Deco Wrought Iron Gates or Room Dividers

Originally used as balcony dividers and mounted front to back, envision these stunning Deco gates facing each other to provide the perfect frame for your garden or interior room. Handwrought of iron and with a delicate and intricate scrolling form, they remind us of butterflies or spider-webs, both appropriate themes for a garden or Art Deco home. In old, somewhat crusty black paint with a small amount of surface rusting show through, we love the old patina, but they can be sandblasted and repainted to your custom specifications for a modest upcharge. So versatile, as they can be installed abutting each other to swing open or further apart, and mounted to a wall and floor, as standing pieces of art on either side of a large entranceway. Please note the dimensions below are when the 2 pieces about each other.

Three-Dimensional Metal and Acrylic Painting of Beach Chairs by the Seaside

Three-Dimensional Metal and Acrylic Painting of Beach Chairs by the Seaside

Not our usual fare, but we were completely taken with the uniqueness of this three-dimensional painting with its vibrant colors, realistic depiction of sand and sea, and the striped chairs, which put you smack in the middle of a French plage (beach). Overall in good vintage condition, there are some losses to the metal frames of the beach chairs, a patch where the applied "sand" has worn away, and maybe a bit of bleed-through of rust in the sky (or it could be the way the artist painted it), but we think this only adds to its realistic feel. Perfect anywhere at a beach home and stunning when paired with our red "Pecheur" painted bistro set with 8 chairs (Stock # FDS 1019).

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

For all you fans of classic garden flamingos, these are the real deal. Entirely made of cast stone over an iron armature, and with a weathered and old, likely original, pink and black painted surface, the form and detailing on these flamingos is fabulous. Both flamingos have hand-incised feather detailing on their backs, outlined on old black and white paint, and their facial expressions are properly insouciant. WIth beautifully-angled legs and detailed joints, the iron armature underneath the cast stone lends additional strength. In very good vintage condition, neither has any cracks, breaks, repairs, or missing parts, although there are a few chips and faint paint crack lines to the legs near the feet. Placed together against a green hedge or in a border bed, these will give you decades of whimsical pleasure. We recommend bringing them indoors for the winter in cold climates, but they will do very well outside year-round in warm areas.

Pair of English 19th Century Terracotta Pedestals by James Stiff and Sons

James Stiff was an English potter born in Suffolk who worked at Eleanor Coades’ Artificial Stone Company in Lambeth, South London, and then at Doulton and Watts Pottery (also in Lambeth). He eventually went on to own his pottery works in 1843. From 1845 on, he is listed at 39 High Street. His sons joined the firm in 1863, and the firm became known as James Stiff and Sons. The firm was sold to Royal Doulton in 1913. These sensational and signed pedestals were once chimney pots, but have recently had tops added by a master craftsman. The work is seamless and undetectable and we love that they are now more functional than chimney pots. In a gorgeous creamy biscuit shade of terracotta, they would be stunning flanking a doorway or entrance to a garden, perhaps with urns or statues on top. In excellent antique condition, they do have a few minor chips to the bottoms of the bases, but nothing that impairs their look or functionality. Please note that although these can remain outside year-round in temperate climates, they should be brought inside in harsh winter climates. We recommend installing them on pieces of stone or concrete footings if they are to bear a heavy load. Priced and sold by the pair.

Pair of French 19th Century Cast Iron Medici Urns

The size, age, and classical form of these 19th century French cast iron Medici urns is what makes them special. Although they have recently been washed with a sweep of white paint, their true age shows through on the interior and they are in perfect antique condition. With deep planting wells measuring 15 inches high x 7.25 inches diameter, these urns can handle a profuse array of blooms or small topiary and would be stunning raised up on pedestals flanking a doorway or atop a large table. If you’re not keen on the surface, they can be over-painted to your custom color specifications for a modest up-charge. Priced and sold as a pair.

Huge Deep Canted Bowl Planter Designed by Willy Guhl #2

We were fortunate enough to recently find these two very-similarly sized enormous canted bowl planters, designed by the iconic Willy Guhl in the 1960s and produced by Eternit. However, because they are slightly different in size and have different weathered patinas, we are listing and selling them separately. This listing is for the lighter of the two planters, but you can see both pieces here in case you would like a near-pair. Made of fiber cement, a lightweight, strong and durable material, the planter can be left outside year-round, although we recommend that you empty and turn the planter upside-down in harsh winter climates. It would be stunning as a focal point in your garden or center driveway island, potted up with a profuse array of annuals, perennials or topiary. In very good condition, overall, there are a few minor chips to the rim, but no cracks or repairs. The planter has a multitude of drain-holes and a slight rim on the bottom to slightly elevate the planter, enabling good drainage.
